This Place Has It All

We know, we know. You’ve heard that claim about pretty much everywhere.

“This place has it all!”

And, fair enough, most countries do have A LOT to offer. After all, when people say “this place has everything” they usually mean it has cities to explore, active adventures and multi-sport opportunities, plenty of culture to dive into and a sense of history. Spin the globe and it’s hard not to find a country that can’t list a little bit of “everything” within its borders.

Which means you are probably asking yourself: what makes Colombia so special, anyway?

It’s a great question and one that we took a lot of time to really consider as we started hosting our trips. In fact, it’s something we still think about every single day, because, while we know in our hearts that Colombia truly is a special place, we also recognize that a lot of places are pretty special. Especially when you call them home, like we do here in Colombia.

It was with that in mind that we set out to break down our “everything” to really get at the heart of it all and ensure you experience something unmatched anywhere else in the world when you visit.

Cities – We think there’s something particularly compelling about the cities of Colombia. It’s all about range and variety. In the northwest you have Cartagena, the “undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast, a historic city of superbly preserved beauty lying within an impressive 13km of centuries-old colonial stone walls,” as Lonely Planet describes her. Up into the Andean mountains you’ll find Medellín, one of the most innovative cities in the world, renewed and transforming every single day. Then there’s our high-altitude capital, Bogotà, which you’ll find in the center of the country. She’s a vibrant city offering a pastiche representing every era of Colombian history and culture.

History – Speaking of history, it’s safe to say our history is very much evident and alive here in Colombia. It’s not contained behind glass or restricted by velvet ropes. The tangible transition we’ve experienced in Colombia is the kind of thing most places can only tell you about or show you a few artifacts representative of an important time in their history. Here, you’ll be steeped in all of it because we live it. In Medellín, we’ll take you to a spot once considered the most dangerous place in the most dangerous city in the world, now brilliantly and beautifully transformed into a city park that encourages community and fellowship. In Cartagena, you’re able and encouraged to go into Old Town and not just see, but walk on the cobblestone streets and even the weathered walls of her storied Spanish-Colonial fort. Or, if you’re on the hunt for adventure, how about we head down the Magdalena in search of the wild hippos that once belonged to Pablo Escobar.

Adventure – Our True Explorer trip category gives you a pretty good idea of the kind of adventure we can pack into (or lightly sprinkle throughout) your Colombia trip. Paragliding, jungle trekking, mountain hikes, scuba diving, caving and more await, and that’s all before you set out into regions previously off-limits to travelers.  There simply aren’t all that many places on the planet that give you the chance to be a true modern travel trailblazer, but that’s all possible in Colombia.

Relaxation –Perusing one of our Comfort style sample itineraries will give you an idea of just how restful and relaxing a Colombia trip can be. Comfort and relaxation all starts with people and the people of Colombia are warm, welcoming and laid back. While we are certainly proud of our ability to throw a party (or festival or carnival), dance to our incredible music all night long, and get your adrenaline pumping with high-octane adventure, we match all of that with our ability to create some incredible spaces for you to lay back and luxuriate in environments perfectly conducive to unwinding.

So yes, while most every destination you visit may claim to “have everything,” it’s only here in Colombia that you’ll get to experience just how extensive and eye-opening our version of everything can be. It’s up to you to choose how you want to experience it all. And it’s up to us to make sure it’s all intelligently and ideally put together for you to have a true Colombian experience.

  1. As Colombia’s tourism star continues to rise, tripling its number of foreign tourists from 2006 to 2018, so too does the risk of overtourism in its most popular destinations.  True Colombia Travel  (TCT), a locally owned tour operator offering custom cultural, culinary and environmental tours aims to help travelers lessen the strain by discovering the hidden treasures within this still-emerging destination.
